Nutritional Series 2: Free Radicals

Hello my beautiful people, hope your all well? So today's post is continuing the series I am doing on the nutritional course that I am doing and as you can see is part 2 (Part 1 can't be found here) and is all about free radicals a term that I'm sure plenty of you have heard before?

What are free radicals?

I'm sure you have noticed that when you slice an apple open it slowly changes into a brown colour, or fish gets that really bad rancid smell? These are a result of a natural process called oxidation and happens to all cells. To protect and fight these free radicals your body provides a fighting mechanism in the form of antioxidants, which will be my next post in the series so be sure to stay tuned.

As oxygen is reacting with your cells this will cause these cells to change formation some may die or for example if you get a cut they will be replaced with fresh new cells, and this is a process that is happening 24/7 in your body without even realising it. Your body will always keep the right level of cells going around your body which is estimated to be around 37.2 trillion.

What do they do in our body?

Even though our body is very good at metabolising oxygen  1-2% get damaged in the process and their molecules turn into free radicals which means they are unstable molecules with unpaired electrons.
They are 'free' because of their missing electron which sends them into a frenzy to try and find another electron to pair with. When they are on the hunt to find another molecule they don't just kill other cells they injure other cells which in itself creates the seed for diseases.
When a cell is damaged it becomes mutates and when it grows abnormally it will also reproduce faster, which leads to health problems.

A free radical will pull off an electron from a neighbouring molecule causing the effected molecule to become a free radical itself. This one then pulls the needed electron from another neighbour and this chain reaction continues, this then causes a cross linking of atomic structures. When this happens that is what leads to ageing and degenerative diseases such as cancer.

External Toxins

There are many external influences that generate these free radicals such as cigarette smoke, UV rays, air pollution and even in foods we eat. When these are brought into the mix your body can not naturally fight these off which is why we need to eat more foods which are rich in antioxidants to eliminate these. The excess of these free radicals increasingly running through our systems causes these diseases such as cancer, Alzheimers and Parkinson's.

I hope you found this post interesting and has helped you understand what free radicals are all about. If you have any comments or anything please leave them below in the comment sections.

My Current Playlist

I don't think I would workout without m headphones in and a really good playlist to get me moving, so I love seeing what other people list to at the gym because everyone has such varied tastes and different music that gets them motivated. Quite often when I am in the gym and people have their big headphone in I do wonder what they have on, is anyone else like that?

My playlist does not vary that much and have only recently changed it up so thats why I thought I would share it with you guys. I generally will go for the latest songs that really get my motivated that are out on the radio at the moment. I find it hard to get motivated from old songs I'm not sure why but they don't energise me the way new songs do.

Do you have any playlists that you listen to in the gym, and what are your favourite songs that get you motivated? I would love to hear your thoughts in the comments below.

Feb Round Up / March Goals

I am not sure how it has gotten to March already but here we are, February has gone so quickly I barley know where it went. Which is why this month I do want to push myself a bit further to achieve a few more things.

So February for me felt like a bit of a wash out, even though it wasn't so much. Its funny how your feelings can be slightly different to reality but thats the beauty of it. So the goals I set for myself at the start of Feb were to to have a certain amount of posts up and going to the gym a certain amount of times, and somewhere through the month I seemed to drift a little and didn't re-focus myself mid-month.

I did achieve most of my goals which were mainly the gym based goals and taking some time to read two books in the month and managed to post on Instagram for 2 weeks in a row which for me is much better consistency.
I did just find out that I passed my first two exams for my level 2 qualification which is great and giving me great confidence to move forward.
The ones that slipped for me were my blog posts goals, so I didn't get up as many posts as I had hoped for. I did get 5 up so that is not bad going for someone working full time, commuting London-Manchester and studying for PT qualification.

The month of March....

As I said above I am going to try and push myself a little further this month, and try and get more of the consistency that I would like especially more so for you guys so you know more or less when posts are going to be going up and can keep track of what is going on.

I am defiantly going to be continuing with my consistency with my social media, I found that is certainly down to bit more planning ahead and getting my posts ready at the weekend for the week ahead. Who know scheduling would be such a god send.

One note to myself though is to remember to do a check point mid-month to make sure I'm on track and keeping that motivation going. Its hard when your pushing on with your own goals but no one said success is going to be easy.

I would love to hear your thoughts feedback or any question you have in comments below, or get in touch via social media - links are below.

Hope you all have a great weekend...
